Michelle Bourque 0:01 You are listening to the extra time podcast and I’m your host certified life coach Michelle Arnold Burke, and today’s episode I’m discussing high performance and Brendon Bouchard. Welcome to the richer time podcast, the podcast where busy professionals like you get the practical solutions and support you need to gain control of your schedule. So you can strive to be the best in your career, but without the stress and overwhelm. If you’re looking to increase your energy and decrease your stress, you are in the right place. Hello, hello. Hello. Welcome back to the podcast friends. And if you are new, we are so happy that you have found us here at Episode 150. Can you even believe it. And for those of you who started with me, you might recall, I first started out recording in Mark’s closet. Right now we have a setup in the office, I have the pup lay in next to me. Mark actually does the editing. It’s so much fun, right. And it’s just so fun to think back to those days. And of course, you know that every 10th episode, I like to share either a mentor, or an interview or a book. And today is no different. Today, I want to if you don’t already know him, give you some visibility to Brendan Bouchard. And the reason I’m picking him today is because I just recently started using his growth day app. And I am loving it. I mean, I’ve talked about him before here. And I’ve talked about specifically his high performance planner that I love to use, and, and love giving to clients as they just get started. So I’ll talk a little bit about some of the concepts he discusses around high performance, and how I think it might be helpful to you in your everyday life. So let’s just start with a little background about him. Brendan is a high performance coach. He is a three time New York Times bestselling author. He’s a podcast host and one of the most quoted, watched and followed personal development trainers and history, according to his website, and Success Magazine, and oh, the Oprah Magazine have both named him one of the most influential leaders and personal growth and achievement. And then I will just end with the fact that Forbes named him the world’s leading high performance coach. And how about this, larry king named him the world’s top motivational trainer. So pretty impressive, right. And I think the first time I was turned on to him, I started following him probably about four years ago through his podcast. And then my girlfriend, Eleanor actually gave me his book, high performance habits, how extraordinary people become that way. And high performance habits is actually a book that is science backed, it’s heart centered, it’s a plan to living a better quality life. And Brendon actually did extensive research on this. And he discusses the most effective habits for reaching long term success. In the book, he shares six habits to move the needle the most in helping you succeed. So they have to do with clarity, energy, necessity, productivity, influence, and courage. And I’m going to dive into each one as we get going here. But he says that they reflect what high performers actually do continually from goal to goal, from project to project from team to team from person to person. And the way the book plays into the planner and the app from what I’m finding so far is that you rate yourself regularly on each habit. And I will tell you, actually doing the ranking and reflecting back on your week is a habit in itself to start. And let me guess you might be saying something like sure sounds great. reflect back. I don’t even have enough time to do what I have to do every day. As it is using I have time to reflect back. I hear you I know what’s going on in your brain because I’m upset at myself right? But I want to tell you something, when you have clarity on what is important, not running around like a chicken with your head cut off trying to people please everyone and not take care of what your priorities are. Which Note to self. You need to know those in order to see if you’re being intentional and focused throughout the day right about what is important. But when you are able to have crystal clear clarity on On those things, you get more of the important things done each day, not busy to be busy, right? Not busy to have that badge of honor, not busy for your worthiness to really be doing what is important to move the business, to enjoy your life to make more money to have more time. That is you being intentional, like, are you determining something that you can maybe get better at? Something to think about, right? A lot of times, we just keep going and going and going. So he talks about the importance of clarity, knowing what that is, he talks about the importance of generating energy. And the reason that this is important is because our energy the way we feel, that is what allows us to keep going. And you we I are responsible for the energy we bring to every situation. And I’m curious if you even know how to generate that energy. Because when you generate your energy, then you are not the victim to your circumstances. So asking your things like, Did you bring joy to the day? Did you work out? Did you pay attention to how you feel? Are you sleeping? Well, all of those things are important factors in determining and generating your energy. Now, the next skill or habit that he talks about is the idea of raising necessity. So questions like are you committed? Do you know your why? And listen, friend, if you don’t know your why, like your deep Why? Your why when things get tough, your why when you are willing to keep going when those things get tough. That’s what you need to know. If you don’t know your deep, why it’s so much easier to get off the path of the goal that you are trying to achieve. are you managing the way you talk to yourself? Are you hitting your deadlines? The thing is the way we speak to ourselves is everything, every thing, how are you doing that? Now, then next one up, increase productivity, not increase your buisiness there is a difference. And I think in this job, especially, let’s face it, most of this society, especially coming from this masculine energy of Go, go, go, Hustle, Hustle, Hustle, and listen. I like the hustle. But not for the sake of trying to one up the next person about how freaking busy you are right or act like you’re so busy, that you cannot possibly take the time to take care of yourself. I see that kind of joking, but also with a lot of compassion. Because I know there are a lot of us out there. And I hear people talking a lot about how busy they are. And sometimes I just want to roll my eyes. First off, what does that even mean? And I actually went to the Googles to look up busy. It means to keep occupied, or having a great deal to do. So keep occupied. That doesn’t necessarily sound like productive, right? That does not increase productivity, necessarily, and having a great deal to do. Let’s go back to clarity and necessity are you doing the important things or just doing things to do things? I have really been trying to be intentional about not saying that I’m so busy too often because also think about that when we’re in relation to the generating energy. One word telling yourself I’m so busy. That’s almost like that overwhelmed feeling right? Or sometimes I hear I’m so busy. I just don’t know where to start confusion, right, which keeps us stuck. Pay attention to how you are speaking to yourself. Pay attention to how you are managing your time. Do you avoid distractions? Do you make progress on your goal? Look at that each day. These are things that more successful people consider not? How can I be a martyr to take care of everyone and everything at the expense of what is important to me. And listen, that doesn’t mean that you don’t care about others. It means you also care enough about yourself that you take care of yourself in order to have that ripple effect and help others and speaking of helping others. Are you developing influence another area Bashar talks about do you show up as a role model? Do you challenge others to grow? Do you help Others maybe think about more ideas about personal development and growth? said no. You can totally share this podcast with them and make it super simple for yourself. And then last but not least, do you demonstrate courage? Do you respond to life’s challenges? Do you deal with your fears? The unknown? Do you show up as your authentic self? Which my friend takes a lot of courage, right? Do you take risks? And taking risks might even be things like showing up as yourself or saying no, because you have to determine something is not listed on your priority list any more? Or saying no, because it doesn’t generate the energy that you want in your life? Or saying no, because it doesn’t raise necessity for you saying no, because it doesn’t help you develop influence or increase your productivity. Got it? There’s so many things to consider. So let’s do a recap here. The six habits that Bashar talks about, seek clarity, generate energy, raise necessity, increase productivity, develop, influence, and demonstrate courage. And I wouldn’t even say just pick one to start, make it easy for yourself. And I would highly suggest the seeking clarity is a great place to begin. We talked a little bit about this last week, right? what is important to you? How are you spending your time now? And do the two lists match up? If not, where can you become more intentional with your priorities? What are three things that maybe you can stop doing in order to get more in line with those priorities? Do that my friend. And once you start gaining awareness on all of this, you are able to start making the changes that you want in life and remember, I am still offering one on one private coaching.
